UPDATE: Man deceased after several attempted rescue efforts

first_imgLetts, IN—The Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department responded with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office Monday to a welfare check in the area of County Road 500 S and County Road 220 SW.Decatur County Communications received a report that an observer has seen a male, Thomas Buck, 66 of Greensburg,  mowing in the area. When the witness returned, around 20 minutes later, he found the mower turned on its side in Sand Creek and Buck was nowhere to be found.Upon arrival, another bystander was in the water feeling for the operator. Firefighters along with a Deputy from the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department entered the chest-deep water and discovered that Buck was pinned under the mower. The firefighters and deputy rolled the mower off Buck and placed him in a basket that was pulled, with a winch, out of the waterway. Buck was assessed by a paramedic and it was determined he was deceased.The accident is still under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled to be performed later today.This story will be updated as information becomes available.last_img read more

Dam Inn Mates take it on the chin again

first_imgBy The Nelson Daily SportsFor the second straight week the Dam Inn Mates took it on the chin.In a rematch of the 2010 West Kootenay Flag Football League final, the Mates once again played second fiddle to the Castlegar Vikings. This time the Vikings hammered the Mates 38-7 in action Sunday at the Mount Sentinel Field. During week one, Hume Brewers thumped the Mates 21-1. In two games the Mates have been outscored 57-8.The Vikings dominated both sides of the ball, scoring at will and twice intercepting Dam Inn quarterbacks. Castlegar quarterback Dave Kravski tossed touchdowns to Carl Perepolkin, Kevin Wilson, Steve Mota and Bryan Lauzon.Kravski also ran for one major while Mota and Wilson picked off Dam Inn passes.The win moves Castlegar into a tie with idle Hume Brewers. Hume also pounded Dam Inn during week one of the season.The score of the contest between Nelson Impact and Whites was not available.The league resumes play Sunday at Mount Sentinel with one game on the schedule. Hume meets Whites at 11 a.m. The following week Castlegar hosts the Brewers at 11 a.m. while Dam Inn meets Whites at 1 [email protected]last_img read more
