How to pay down your student loans and maintain your sanity

first_img 51SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr If you have student loans, you’ve probably heard the numbers: There is $1.3 trillion in outstanding student debt in the U.S. More than 40 million Americans have at least one student loan. Seventy percent of bachelor degree recipients will graduate with student debt; on average, their balances are north of $30,000 apiece. But if you have or will soon have student debt, you also probably care more about your own numbers than the aggregate ones. If you’re in high school, you want to how much debt you’ll have to take on in order to go to college. If you’re in college, you want to know how much interest you’re accruing. If you’re out of school and in repayment, you want to know how many extra payments it’ll take you to pay off the loans faster; you might also want to know how much money you could save if you refinanced your debt to better terms. With these questions in mind, I’ve compiled a guide to help you get better-acquainted with your student debt. If it’s been awhile since you’ve checked in on your loans — or if you’re preparing to go to college and it’s been awhile since you’ve thought about how you’ll pay for it — use the below information to check in on your student loans and even, perhaps, take an extra step towards a debt-free life. continue reading »last_img read more

Prepare for the Kiwi invasion

first_imgThe New Zealanders are here and they mean business. Not so much the winning-type of business but more of a preparing their up-and-coming players for international touch football.Touch Football New Zealand has sent four of their development teams to the X-Blades National Youth Championships at Port Macquarie to gain international experience. The four teams – under 15s boys and girls, under 17s and boys and girls – will go head-to-head with some of the strongest youth teams in Australia like Queensland Secondary Schools Touch and New South Wales Combined High Schools, as well as teams from Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.Touch New Zealand tour manager Bruce Morton said it was a great opportunity to blood some of the country’s best young touch players.“It is part of our high performance pathway,” Morton said. “Basically it is getting them up to that next step in international level.“We want to expose our young teams to the highest level and this is a fantastic tournament to do that.”Like it is in Australia, touch is very strong across the ditch.Australia and New Zealand are the two best ranked touch football teams in the world. They contested in five of the seven division finals at last year’s World Cup in Edinburgh. They went head-to-head in the Trans-Tasman Test Series in Mudgee in April with Australia taking out the series 3-0.“There is still plenty of work to do but we are trying to put in processes of getting stronger and stronger, so that one-two [world ranking] slot swaps around,” Morton said.Coming over the Tasman and playing at the NYC is a step in the right direction, Morton says.“We do as much as we can in New Zealand but to get that exposure to the next level you really need to come to something like this and this is why we do it.“The next four days, results aren’t important to us. “It’s about how the team prepares, getting some coaches’ experience and we have a few referees over here as well. “It is about the experience for us. Getting them used to that tournament mode and that international standard.”For more information on the NYC, check out these websites:NYC – www.nyc.mytouchfooty.comTouch Football Australia – www.austouch.com.auRelated LinksPrepare for the Kiwi invasionlast_img read more

Bombardier shareholders to vote on call for more lobbying transparency

first_imgMONTREAL – Pension plan managers and other institutions holding millions of Bombardier shares would like to see the transportation giant go the extra mile for lobbying transparency. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), the California Teachers’ Pension Fund and the Florida State Board of Administration (SBA) said they are supporting a proposal by OceanRock Investments asking Bombardier’s board to file an annual report on direct and indirect lobbying activities. The proposal will be voted on Thursday at Bombardier’s annual meeting.SBA governance analyst Tracy Stewart says one can never be too careful given that there are currently a lot of political risks. At the end of fiscal 2017, the CPPIB, the California Teachers’ Pension Fund and the SAB — with assets under management totalling nearly $881 billion — held approximately 7.6 million Class A and B shares of the Quebec multinational. The OceanRock Investments initiative has also been endorsed by the two major shareholder advisory agencies, Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS).Bombardier has urged its shareholders to vote against the motion, arguing that is already reports monthly on its federal lobbying with the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada and the information is found on the Quebec Lobbyists’ Registry for provincial activities.Reports on lobbying in the United States are available to the general public through the House of Representatives, it added in its proxy circular released in March. The proposal is unlikely to pass because the Beaudoin-Bombardier family controls 51.5 of the voting rights thanks to the multiple voting shares.Meanwhile, with the exception of the Florida institution, the CPPIB and the California Teachers’ Pension Fund are endorsing the compensation policy for Bombardier’s key executives. In 2017, the company’s top five executives earned total compensation of US$30.8 million, up 12.3 per cent over the prior year. Including board chairman Pierre Beaudoin raises the total payroll to US$33.4 million, up seven per cent. The annual meeting will be the last as a board member after 43 years for Laurent Beaudoin, the architect of its growth as the manufacturer of planes and trains. The meeting is ten days before his 80th birthday.Companies in this report: (TSX:BBD.B)last_img read more

SNCLavalin gets contract to design deliver 19billion chemical plant in Oman

first_imgMONTREAL – SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. says it has reached an agreement to design and deliver a chemical plant in Oman that will cost an estimated $1.9 billion to build. The Montreal-based engineering and construction company says it will support the program from concept development to commissioning of the plant, and work along with Omani contractors.SNC-Lavalin will also support the operations and maintenance of the plant, to be built about 150 kilometres southeast of Muscat, the capital of Oman.“This contract is a major strategic win for us, helping to grow our business in the region and demonstrate our world-leading credentials,” said Christian Brown, president of oil and gas at SNC-Lavalin in a statement.“Oman is an important market for SNC-Lavalin where we have a long history of safely delivering complex major projects.”Last year, SNC-Lavalin was awarded a long-term framework contract from Petroleum Development Oman to help commission and manage its upstream assets in the country. SNC-Lavalin has set up an academy in Muscat to train and develop graduate engineers in the commissioning as part of the contract. The new chemical plant is expected to produce about 227,000 tonnes a year of polyvinyl chloride for export to Asia. The plastic material is used in a wide range of products from piping to medical devices to credit cards. The facility will also produce about 127,000 tonnes of sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, to support local industries. Caustic soda has a variety of industrial applications including for production of petroleum products, soap and in water treatment. The SNC-Lavalin contract was signed with Project Development & Management International LLC.Oman’s production of petroleum and other liquids stood at around a million barrels a day in 2016. The country’s oil and gas production has been boosted by newer production techniques including enhanced oil recovery that allows for more production from older oil fields.SNC-Lavalin has been awarded several other contracts in the Middle East this year, including a contract for the expansion of a district cooling scheme in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, a contract with Saudi Aramco to expand a major gas processing facility in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, as well as a five-year agreement to provide general engineer services to a joint venture between Aramco Gulf Operations Co. Canadian agriculture ministers briefed on tradewar contingency plan

first_imgVANCOUVER – Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay emphasized the importance of the provinces working together as an escalating trade war with the United States puts some farmers on edge. The minister said his provincial and territorial counterparts discussed trade negotiations and the contingency plan during their conference that wrapped up Friday in Vancouver. There’s already a safety net in place through the $3-billion Canadian Agricultural Partnership launched earlier this year to help farmers manage risks and deal with problems, MacAulay said.“We’re not going to speculate on what might develop or might not develop, but there’s a framework in place with the Canadian Agricultural Partnership now,” he said. “There is a system in place to make sure if we hit any major problems that we’re able to deal with it. That’s why this meeting in the last couple of days is so important.”MacAulay also announced a renewed $55-million AgriRisk Initiatives Program, which he said will help protect farmers against business risks they face.B.C. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said she was satisfied with the federal plan and said the provinces are united in the context of the trade war.“We stand as one voice, as Canada, in a situation like this,” she said. While U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue has promised that President Donald Trump will restore farmer profitability in that country, he hasn’t specified how and some economists are skeptical that the administration can come up with the billions of dollars necessary to cover losses.Perdue said last month he wasn’t pushing for Canada to do away with its supply management system that controls price and supply of dairy, eggs and chicken, after Trump said he wanted the system dismantled and blasted Canada for charging a 270 per cent tariff on imported dairy products.Ottawa introduced $16.6-billion worth of retaliatory tariffs on some American imports earlier this month in reaction to American tariffs on steel and aluminum. The United States fired back Monday at the Canadian government by launching a formal challenge with the World Trade Organization, at the same time as it filed separate disputes against the European Union, China, Mexico and Turkey over similar counter-tariffs.last_img read more

Best possible Premier League destinations for Carvajal

first_imgWe take a look at the best possible Premier League destinations for Real Madrid right-back Daniel Carvajal after playing in Spanish football.Real Madrid right-back Daniel Carvajal can easily be considered one of the best players in the world on his position, he recently revealed that he will play in the Premier League some day.During an interview for Libero magazine, Carvajal dropped this bomb: “I would love to play in the Premier League. It’s an experience that I would like to have and I don’t want to regret turning down a possible opportunity.”Now that we know for sure that Dani will come to play in England someday, it’s not a bad idea to imagine which clubs will be best-suited for his talents if he decided to leave next season and started playing in the Premier League. We obviously took the liberty of selecting three clubs that we believe would be a great fit for Daniel Carvajal if he decided to make his career move soon, the man has already won everything at Real Madrid and a change of scenery wouldn’t be that bad.PEP: We controlled them in terms of their counter attacks, our back four was so good.We had good build-up with patience, but the problem after that was we didn’t create too much. pic.twitter.com/Ir6sflVNxi— Manchester City (@ManCity) October 7, 2018Manchester CityConsidering his present and love for Real Madrid, it would be difficult to imagine Daniel Carvajal playing under Pep Guardiola but anything can happen in football. The Catalan manager would certainly welcome a talented player like him, one who can compete against the likes of Kyle Walker and Danilo for a position as the team’s right-back.Carvajal has all the qualities that Pep Guardiola looks for in this position, a player with impressive defensive capabilities but also with a keen sense of going on the attack with creativity and someone who can create a special bond with the wingers on his side of the field. There are not many right-backs who have the quality that Daniel Carvajal have with the ball at their feet, he already dominated both La Liga and the Bundesliga, there is nothing that can stop him from doing the same in English football. We are United, and this is Inside Old Trafford on another memorable matchday!Watch the full version now: https://t.co/UJPORywwDI pic.twitter.com/38RaW9CzZs— Manchester United (@ManUtd) October 8, 2018Roberto Firmino, LiverpoolVirgil van Dijk praises Roberto Firmino after Liverpool’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Virgil van Dijk hailed team-mate Roberto Firmino after coming off the bench to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 comeback win against Newcastle United.Manchester UnitedEven if we still don’t know if Jose Mourinho will remain in the club or not for the upcoming years, there is no question that Daniel Carvajal would want to play in a historic club like Manchester United where he would take full control of the right-back position. But assuming that the Portuguese manager stays in the Red Devils until his contract comes to an end in 2020 and Dani comes before that, Mourinho would rejoice of having such a versatile player at his disposal. There is no question that the boss would reposition the Spaniard as a central defender and transform him in the same vein that Sergio Ramos evolved from a right-back, to the outstanding player that we know and love today.Carvajal has enough range and versatility to become a full-time center-back if the managers needed it.One, two, three! ⚽️⚽️⚽️Job done! 👍 #SOUCHE pic.twitter.com/UJHkR4mm5a— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) October 7, 2018Chelsea FCConsidering that Maurizio Sarri will most likely need a replacement for Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, there is no doubt that he would completely love the idea of bringing Dani Carvajal as the most suitable replacement for the Blues. In fact, getting the Real Madrid player for Chelsea would be an upgrade to what Chelsea has to offer right now in the position and it wouldn’t take him that much to completely own the spot inside Maurizio Sarri’s starting eleven. But in the end, Carvajal’s options are way more than just three squads. Other clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, and even Tottenham would kill to have a world-class right-back like Daniel Carvajal.Us Premier League lovers can only dream that he will make the decision to come to England sooner, rather than later.“I would love to play in the Premier League. It is an experience that I would like to have – I won’t retire without having it.”– Dani Carvajal pic.twitter.com/IYK0x1mP6f— Transfer News (@TransferChecker) October 9, 2018Which other clubs would you like Carvajal to represent when he decides to chance La Liga for the Premier League?
