Candidate turnout starts for Murphy’s council seat

first_imgBURBANK – Two people have formally declared their candidacy for the City Council seat vacated by Stacey Murphy, with three others likely to file by Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline, officials said. Optometrist David Gordon and attorney Amy Lawrence have filed nominating papers, including the signatures of 50 people, to appear on the Jan. 24 ballot. Three others – Michael Dontanville, Bill Wiggins and Vahe Hovanessian – have taken out papers, but have not yet returned the documents to the City Clerk’s Office. “I don’t expect them all to be returned until Friday,” City Clerk Margarita Campos said. “By (next) Tuesday we should be announcing who the candidates are.” Ballots will go out Jan. 3 to more than 54,000 registered voters for the all-mail election. The winner will replace Murphy, who resigned Aug. 30 after pleading not guilty to a felony charge of drug possession and a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment in an investigation linked to the Vineland Boys gang.
