Prepare for the Kiwi invasion

first_imgThe New Zealanders are here and they mean business. Not so much the winning-type of business but more of a preparing their up-and-coming players for international touch football.Touch Football New Zealand has sent four of their development teams to the X-Blades National Youth Championships at Port Macquarie to gain international experience. The four teams – under 15s boys and girls, under 17s and boys and girls – will go head-to-head with some of the strongest youth teams in Australia like Queensland Secondary Schools Touch and New South Wales Combined High Schools, as well as teams from Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.Touch New Zealand tour manager Bruce Morton said it was a great opportunity to blood some of the country’s best young touch players.“It is part of our high performance pathway,” Morton said. “Basically it is getting them up to that next step in international level.“We want to expose our young teams to the highest level and this is a fantastic tournament to do that.”Like it is in Australia, touch is very strong across the ditch.Australia and New Zealand are the two best ranked touch football teams in the world. They contested in five of the seven division finals at last year’s World Cup in Edinburgh. They went head-to-head in the Trans-Tasman Test Series in Mudgee in April with Australia taking out the series 3-0.“There is still plenty of work to do but we are trying to put in processes of getting stronger and stronger, so that one-two [world ranking] slot swaps around,” Morton said.Coming over the Tasman and playing at the NYC is a step in the right direction, Morton says.“We do as much as we can in New Zealand but to get that exposure to the next level you really need to come to something like this and this is why we do it.“The next four days, results aren’t important to us. “It’s about how the team prepares, getting some coaches’ experience and we have a few referees over here as well. “It is about the experience for us. Getting them used to that tournament mode and that international standard.”For more information on the NYC, check out these websites:NYC – www.nyc.mytouchfooty.comTouch Football Australia – www.austouch.com.auRelated LinksPrepare for the Kiwi invasionlast_img read more
