Educator’s calm, positive attitude earns her top honors

EAST WHITTIER – When Scott Avenue Elementary School teacher Margaret Fitzsimons reflects back on her career, it’s the little moments that stand out in her mind: a brief comment from a child in class, meaningful contact with a parent, or much-needed advice from a seasoned colleague. “When I think back on all the children I’ve come in contact with over the years and how much I’ve learned from those I’ve worked with, it’s amazing,” said Fitzsimons, 47, a first-grade teacher who’s worked at Scott Avenue for 19 years. “You just learn so much from everyone.” But her co-workers and bosses say Fitzsimons is the one who brings the most to her job – from making sure her students feel valued in the classroom to serving as a master teacher at her school for beginning teachers.
